Maxwell
In this exclusive interview, Maxwell talks to ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino about what he’s spinning and so much more…
A Taste:
Michael Jackson, Fleet Foxes, Feist, Grizzly Bear
Maxwell has had a hell of year.
His latest album, BLACKsummers’ Night, proved why he’s one of the most important “soul men” of the 21st century, skyrocketing up the charts and leading to all kinds of crazy acclaim from the press and biz. His voice, style and swagger are undeniable and unmatched in the R&B game right now. He’s just plain cool…
Why is Maxwell so cool? Well, he’s really got his finger on the pulse of what’s happening, and his musical palette knows no bounds.
He laughs, “I’m always listening to a lot of music.”
Maxwell sat down with ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino to discuss what he’s spinning. He shared his playlist with us, check it out below…
Maxwell’s Playlist:
1. Michael Jackson
Oh my goodness, I can say Michael Jackson is overwhelming me right now. Every and any chance I get to listen to him, I’m listening to him. I look at what he’s done, and I’m blown away.
2. Fleet Foxes
I love Fleet Foxes!
3. Grizzly Bear
I’m checking out Grizzly Bear. They have a really good song that I’m getting into.
4. Ryan Leslie
I like Ryan Leslie a lot.
5. Johnny Guitar Watson
6. Mad Lovers
I love all the old greats. Johnny Guitar Watson, Mad Lovers—I put that on before I go on stage. If you can hit certain notes, then you’re good for the night.
7. Heat Wave
8. Quincy Jones
9. Feist

Maxwell’s lyrics are deep. And they are open to personal perception, you take them where you want to be and he supplies the atmosphere for the thoughts to breed. It’s all about taking the words he uses and putting them into perspective in your life….whirrd
Not to mention, he has one of the most velvety voices out there…and the jams…mhmmm
Yes, his lyrics do require that you allow them to take you where they take you. That’s one of the things I like about his music. Sometimes I totally blank out on a song…the music so hypnotic, then my consciousness returns and I feel refreshed at the end of the song. It’s some weird sort of voodoo, that he do! Sade’s music has that effect on me as well. I would love to see them perform together…..
I am convinced Jimmy C just cant comprehend his lyrics.
Courty – Well said.
Erica – those two together would be AMAZING.
Jimmy C is just hating. Maxwell’s lyrics go just far enough and allows the listener to fill in the rest. As far as I’m concerned, that’s GENIUS!!
He is a true artist. His voice is perfection, I call him Butter because his voice is smooth and nobody else in the game can do what he does. lyrics or no lyrics maxwell can sing the abc’s thru a song and it would’nt matter a bit. I would like to know if he speaks spanish. and if so why not do a spanish album
that would be to much sexy for me. clone this man.
I think Maxwell’s lyrics are a third of the reason why I listen to his music. the other third is for his vocal interpretation and the other third is his sex appeal. BlackSummerNight shows a lot of blues influence (possum playing) and gospel. i hear a lot of work in his voice and a lot of connection with the band and it is beautiful. its so beautiful to see someone find themselves and grow even more beautiful (esp to look at).
@Jimmy C WHATT?? That’s part of the reason I believe everybody loves him! His lyrics are soo MEANINGFUL!!
