Buzz Osbourne gives ARTISTdirect.com a look at his playlist for this exclusive feature
A Taste:
Miles Davis, The Who, Captain Beefheart
Melvins mainman Buzz Osbourne likes to switch it up when it comes to his playlist.
He’s rocking everything from The Who to Captain Beefheart right now, and that eclectic side definitely bleeds over onto the Melvins’ forthcoming remix release, Chicken Switch [Ipecac Recordings]. Due out on September 29, Switch gave various remixers the chance to chop up a Melvins album and make one song out of it. The results are quite mind-bending…
ARTISTdirect.com spoke to Buzz about his playlist for this exclusive feature. Check it out below and pick up Chicken Switch when it releases on September 29.
The last album that I listened to was Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. That was yesterday. I haven’t had time this morning yet. I like Bitches Brew, and I like the On the Corner record. By and large, I don’t usually like most of his stuff. A lot of his best stuff is from the Bitches Brew and On The Corner sessions, they just chopped it into different records. The stuff he did before that is just like elevator music. I like the weirder stuff. Read more »
It’s no surprise that the mouthpiece for the kings of thrash metal cops to being a fan of the king of rock n’ roll. They’re both music royalty in their own right! What better way to unwind during the Mayhem Tour than a little Elvis?
There’s always music playing in the Araya home too. Tom explains, “My kids listen to new music all the time. They’re hip to MTV, VH1 and all that crazy stuff. They go through phases though. My daughter liked The Jonas Brothers, but I don’t think she does anymore. They liked My Chemical Romance at one time and Fall Out Boy at another time. They like one or two songs from each and that’s about it.”
He continues, “It’s sad because I always ask them, ‘Aren’t the other songs on these records any good? You should listen to the record as opposed to just one or two songs.’ They honestly admit that the other songs aren’t great. I tell them, ‘If you really enjoy music, you should enjoy the entire record instead of listening to one song and discarding the rest.’ That’s the joy of iTunes though, right? You haven’t wasted fourteen dollars; you’ve only burnt two. It’s a whole new world from trading tapes to iTunes [Laughs].”
Check out Tom’s playlist below and be sure to pick up Slayer’s next epic, World Painted Blood when it drops this fall.

This song with was on mega-high rotate for a VERY long time. I remember walking around with a friend in the supermarket, and we were singing it to ourselves. Two little girls pushing the shopping trolley for their mom joined in on the ”Ella, ella, ella…” Made us smile.
The singing on Pet Sounds is so very special that I truly believe everyone should have the album. The life of Brian Wilson is also one of those tragic stories of passion and genius and madness. It makes the music even more unique. Read more »
Quentin Tarantino gives ARTISTdirect.com editor Rick Florino an exclusive look at what’s on his playlist while kicking it at Amoeba Music in Hollywood…
A Taste:
Cat Stevens, Elvis, Nas
“I’m moving around a lot musically,” laughs Quentin Tarantino as he shuffles through Amoeba Music—Hollywood’s most famous record store.
Tarantino shifts and bends genres better than anyone—not just on screen either. His soundtracks perfectly bridge the gap between artists and styles that may seem a mile apart. For his chop-em-up action epic Kill Bill, he enlisted RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan for original compositions, while Pulp Fiction paired Dick Dale and Ricky Nelson on the same CD. Tarantino has created some seemingly strange but utterly memorable cinematic musical moments, and Inglourious Basterds is no exception at all.
Deploying David Bowie’s “Cat People (Putting Out the Fire)” on the soundtrack for his WWII masterpiece Basterds is the perfect example of Tarantino’s talent for always giving viewers and listeners something delightfully surprising and ultimately unforgettable.
So what does he listen to?
Of course, Tarantino’s playlist is enigmatic to say the least.
While walking around Amoeba, Tarantino shared his current playlist with ARTISTdirect.com for this exclusive feature. Check it out below, pick up the Inglourious Basterds soundtrack now and catch the film in theaters Friday August 21st!
Shorts director Robert Rodriguez tells ARTISTdirect.com the music he plays for his kids and how they’ve inspired him in this exclusive playlist feature…
The director laughs, “My son actually came to me with the initial idea for Shorts. We wanted to make shorts with a bunch of kids, and it worked out because I love doing short stories!”
Rodriguez is also really good at making them too. Shorts is the best family adventure all year because of Rodriguez’s penchant for innovative storytelling and fast-paced action. In fact, some of the more high-octane sequences could stand alongside his best action work like Desperado—minus all of the bullets, blood and four-letter words.
Rodriguez’s kids definitely inspire him, but he’s always turning them on to good music. He continues, “I grew up listening to classic rock. I play my kids the stuff I listened to as a kid. They think The Police is really cool! That was the first album I got. My kids have got Rock Band, and they’re playing all of those songs. It’s hilarious to see that they’re into stuff that I was into when I was their age.”
Right now, he’s just cranking movie tunes. “I play a whole mix of stuff—a lot of soundtracks. I’m really just listening to different scores. They’re all jumbled together.”
Check out some of the bands Robert has turned his kids on to below, make sure to watch our cast interviews and don’t miss Shorts when it hits theaters this Friday. It’s a blast!
