Madcon

Posted by Playlisted on Apr 13, 2009 in music artists

MadconNorway’s hottest export, Madcon, offers up their playlists to us in this exclusive feature…

A Taste:

Queens of the Stone Age, Raphael Saadiq, Frankie Valli

“You could say we’re very animated people,” laughs Madcon’s Yosef Wolde-Mariam. “We like messing around, and we don’t take ourselves too seriously. To me, that’s important, especially in hip hop. It’s ridiculous how serious most rappers take themselves. Having to hold your pose and your cap a certain way seems like too much work [Laughs]. Fuck that.”

The platinum-selling Norwegian cosmic R&B maestros are certainly having fun—even when they’re sad.

On a bumpin’ 21st century update of Frankie Valli’s take-me-back anthem, “Beggin’”, Madcon wind and weave intelligent rhymes over a spacey groove. An emotional hook takes hold, and the duo effectively launches soul into outer space.

While prepping their U.S. debut, Madcon’s Yosef and Tshawe Baqwa sat down with us to discuss “Beggin’” and share their playlists in this exclusive feature. What they’re rockin’ may surprise you…

Check out Madcon’s playlists below!

Yosef Wolde-Mariam’s Playlist:

1. Frankie Valli — “Beggin’”

“When we heard the 2008 version of that song, we were blown away. I felt the message of the song—’Don’t be too proud to beg.’ Valli was in that moment when it happened. The message of the song is ‘be honest,’ but in this macho culture, it’s hard. Let’s say you’re chilling with your boys and your girlfriend just broke up with you. Your boys will ask, ‘What happened?’ You’ll tell them, ‘I was tired; I just dumped her.’ Be honest about it. If that’s what you feel, that’s what you feel. Don’t be afraid to say it.”

SalivaSaliva drummer Paul Crosby opens up his iTunes and shares his playlist with us in this exclusive feature

A Taste:

Hollywood Undead, Killswitch Engage, Halestorm

Saliva drummer Paul Crosby was on a brief break from the road, but that didn’t stop him from providing ARTISTdirect.com with his Top 5 playlist. Saliva issued their fifth album for Island, Cinco Diablo, at the tail end of last year. 2009 sees the band remaining on tour. After the break, they will appear this spring on the resurrected Sno Core® tour as a featured attraction. Here’s what Crosby is rocking and not surprisingly, it’s mostly rock and metal.

Paul is totally proud of what’s rocking his world when he’s not rocking yours!

Paul Crosby’s Playlist:

1. Hollywood Undead

2. Halestorm

“They have a new album coming out on Atlantic. We just got off tour with them and Shinedown, so I’ve been listening to them.”

Jody Hill

Posted by Playlisted on Apr 10, 2009 in movie celebrities

Jody HillJody Hill, the auteur behind Observe and Report shares some favorite tunes with us…

A Taste:

Queen, City Wolf, Observe and Report Soundtrack

Filmmaker Jody Hill is something of a comedy scholar. Viewing the genre in “classical” terms, he understands that the best comedy comes from tragedy. His heroes have all fallen from grace but somehow steadfastly maintain the illusion of who they think they should be. That’s where the laughs come in for his breakthrough debut, The Foot Fist Way and, of course, his brutally hilarious HBO show, Eastbound and Down. However, Jody’s most delusional and hysterical hero is Observe and Report’s Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogen). Ronnie’s a maniacal mall security guard with an itchy trigger figure and an itchier yearning for acceptance.

In order to fuel Ronnie’s quest for justice, Jody chose some great tunes for Observe and Report’s soundtrack. He decided to share some of those with us in this exclusive playlist feature.

David Carradine

David CarradineDavid Carradine shares his playlist with us in this exclusive feature…

A Taste:

B.B. King, Seal

“It probably sounds strange to you, but I don’t actually listen to music,” says David Carradine with a heavy dose of sincerity. “When I started writing music, I sort of stopped listening to it. I used to collect LPs. Back in those days, I had tons of them. Then I discovered that I didn’t listen to music for entertainment anymore; I only listened to it for information. I’d buy an album, I’d listen to it once and that would be it.”

However, when he does choose to crank some tunes, Carradine’s taste is interesting to say the least. The legendary Kung Fu and Kill Bill star does have a favorite spot on the dial when he’s cruising around Los Angeles.

He continues, “When I’m in the car, I listen to 100.3 ‘The Sound’ in L.A. It’s very eclectic. It could be country. It could be rock n’ roll. It could be pop—almost anything. It’s always something you haven’t heard before, haven’t heard in a long time or rarely hear. So I just put that on. That’s about the only thing I’m listening to consistently. My house is full of music all the time though. My wife puts on either some satellite thing or a CD she’s got.”

Anna Faris

Posted by Playlisted on Apr 6, 2009 in movie celebrities

Anna FarisAnna Faris talks “musical” roles and tells us who she wishes she could sing like in this exclusive playlist feature…

A Taste:

Whitney Houston

Anna Faris got to have some fun playing Observe and Report’s Brandi—makeup counter girl by day, party animal by night.

“Brandi is the worst character I’ve ever played,” laughs Anna. “That was such a joy though [Laughs]. It’s not that often that you get to be bad, especially me. I usually play pretty sweet girls. Brandi is awful in every way. It was definitely privilege.”

In person, Anna displays the same sweetness that most of her characters do—excluding Brandi of course. Also, Anna’s imbued many of her characters with quite a musical sensibility, which also extended Anna rocking out in a few scenes of Observe and Report.

She continues, “I love all kinds of music. I love indie rock. My fiancé loves country so I’m starting to listen to that. I love R&B. But I don’t know why I’m always singing in movies because I have the worst voice you could ever imagine [Laughs]. For some reason, people think it’s amusing. I used to think I could sing, but it turns out I can’t [Laughs].”

Singing talent aside, Anna decided to share her playlist selection with us in this exclusive feature. Check it out below!

Underoath

UnderoathUnderoath singer Spencer Chamberlain offers up his playlist to us in this exclusive feature…

A Taste:

Deftones, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails

Underoath are one of hard rock’s simultaneously most ambient and brutal acts. So it’s no surprise that Underoath vocalist Spencer Chamberlain’s playlist has a healthy dose of Radiohead tempered by some good old fashioned sonic anger. Underoath’s latest album, Lost In the Sound of Separation, bridges the gap between Phil Anselmo and Thom Yorke in the most beautiful way possible. Plus, the band’s gearing up for a headlining slot on the 2009 installment of the Warped Tour this summer.

In between everything, Spencer found the time to share his playlist with us. He opened up his iTunes and let us see what he’s spinning.

Check out Spencer’s playlist below!
